Mountain trail or fell running

The area around Les Monts du Cantal is a treasure trove of trails but remains almost unknown outside of France. There are hundreds if not thousands of Kilometres of routes spread out across the region. Varying in difficulty, in altitude and in terrain but consistant in excellent signage and beautiful surroundings. Unlike in the UK, here in the Cantal Auvergne, runners need sun cream more than waterproofs.

Trail running is really popular in the Cantal and there are loads of organised events and competitions which take place all year round. For a challenge on the scale of the Bob Graham round try the UTPMA from Aurillac. On a par with, or possibly more difficult than the trail de Mont Blanc. Fell runners association UK members, why not give it a try next June?

For the visitor wanting to plan a running holiday on their own or in a group you can easily find options for low or high level trails which criss cross the landscape. There are many available on the official Puy Mary website link below.

UTPMA

The Ultra Trail Puy Mary Aurillac ( UTPMA ) is one of the most difficult in France with it’s longest route covering 105 kilometres and 5500 metres of climbing. There are thousands of entrants and it’s a real festival atmosphere for runners and spectators alike.

La Pastourelle

La Pastourelle is a combined trail, walking and mountain biking event which starts in Salers and runs right into the centre of the mountains and to the summit of Puy Mary before returning to Salers. It is hugely popular in France and is a real fun event with the help of the Mad Cow group who organise extra entertainment on the day.
